Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Mr Pierre Célice.
In Le Pouldu, Brittany, Hayden would meet Wladyslaw Slewinski who had been a friend of Gauguin's since meeting him at the Academie Colarossi in 1888. Slewinski settled in Bas Pouldu from 1891, where he entertained artists who would later be known as the School of Pont-Aven. By 1911, when this work was painted, the influence of Slewinski and Gauguin can be seen in Hayden's work.
