AUGUST SANDER
Antlitz der Zeit -- Face of our Time. Introduction by Alfred Döblin. Munich: Transmare and Kurt Wolff, 1929.

Quarto (297 x 225 mm). 60 black and white photographs. Original yellow cloth, spine and front cover printed in black, original printed dust-jacket (expert small repairs to the corners and ends of spine panel); original printed cardboard slipcase. Provenance: deleted contemporary inscription on front endpaper.

FIRST EDITION. A VERY GOOD COPY IN THE RARE DUST-JACKET AND SLIPCASE. "One of the great documentary works of all times... IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO OVERESTIMATE THE INFLUENCE OF THIS WORK on later photography, documentary, and otherwise" (101 Books). "Many of his classic images are included in this seminal photobook" (The Photobook). This penetrating work was seen as very dangerous when the Nazis came to power in 1933: copies still with the publisher were seized, and the printing plates were destroyed. 101 Books, pp.52-3; The Open Book, pp.84-5; The Photobook, vol. I, p.124.
