Lot Essay

As in the previous lot, this composition is entirely formed from the number one/letter alef. Here it takes on circular form. In the ancient Near Eastern traditions, which also extend into the Islamic period, the circle is a symbol of the heavens. This symbolic meaning is heightened by the strong kinetic movement it lends to the painting.
