4 parts and appendix bound in 2 volumes, 2° (534 x 369mm.), 'Class II' title only, printed in red and black, dedication printed in black, complete with the 4pp. of index and list of subscribers bound at end, divisional 'Waterbirds' title to vol. II, 133 hand-coloured etched plates (11 quadrupeds, 122 birds) by P. Mazell after P. Paillou. (Two plates and two text leaves with old repairs to margins, two plates with tears to lower margins just into images but without loss, slight offsetting of plates onto text, first leaf of preface loose and frayed at lower margin, second and third preface leaves slightly loose and cut down at fore-edge, occasional minor spotting and paper discolouration.) Contemporary half calf, spines with blue morocco lettering pieces and FFF gilt stamp (boards and extremities rubbed, joints cracking, spines worn). Provenance: Francis Ferrand Foljambe (binding).
FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE WITH THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PLATES. Pennant, probably the best known British ornithologist of the eighteenth century, was the first to attempt to list and portray all of the British species, many of them life-size. This copy contains the supplementary appendix of 25 plates, bringing the number of plates to 132. Mullens and Swann 465 mention copies with 133 plates, 'but these are not as originally published'.
