One plate volume, 2° (622 x 494mm) and one text volume, 4° (260 x 203mm). 70 hand-coloured etched plates only by Selby, Robert Mitford and W.H. Lizars after Selby, Mitford and Sir William Jardine, on paper watermarked 1818, 1820 & 1821, comprising nos. I, I*, III-XIII, XIII*XIV, XV, XV*, XVI, XVII, XVII*, XVIII, XVIII*, XIX-XXIV, XIV*, XXV-XXVII, XVII*, XXVIII-XXXIV, XXXIV*, XXXV, XXXVI (jay), XXXVI (starling & paster), XXXVII-XLII, XLII*, XLIII*, XLIV, LIV, XLV, XLV**, XLV*, XLVI-LIII, LVI, LVI*, LVII, LVIII, LVIII*, LIX, , LXI, LXIII, LXV. Text to parts 3 & 5 only, comprising pp.[25-]38 & [65-]87. (Some light foxing to flyleaves, otherwise a clean set of plates, tiny hole to pl. XXV in plate image but without loss; very small hole to margin of pl. XXXV.) Plate volume bound in contemporary half morocco over brown decorative cloth, upper cover lettered in gilt, text vol. bound in matching cloth (plate vol. rubbed, corners repaired).

'[SELBY'S] GREATEST WORK WILL EVER BE DEEMED HIS CELEBRATED ILLUSTRATIONS OF BRITISH ORNITHOLOGY ... OUR ENGLISH EQUIVALENT OF AUDUBON'S GREAT WORK' (Mullens and Swann, p. 518).
