2 volumes, 2° (340 x 223 mm). Additional engraved title and 45 plates, most double-page, 6 folding, including large folding map of Japan. Letterpress titles in red and black, list of subscribers, index bound at end, appendix bound at end of vol. II. (Small hole at gutter of first title, additional engraved title repaired at gutter, small tears to 6C1 and O1 of appendix in vol. II.) Contemporary calf, spines with red and green morocco lettering-pieces (rebacked and recornered, cover to vol. I detached, corners rubbed).

FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Kaempfer, a German physician, travelled throughout Japan in 1690-91. His History -- an encyclopaedic description of the Japanese flora and fauna, government and industries -- remained the chief source of Western knowledge of Japan for over a century. This English translation is by Scheuchzer, the librarian of Sir Hans Sloane, who had acquired Kaempfer's botanical specimens after the author's death.
