4° (256 x 198mm). 6 folding engraved maps, including frontispiece map of Florida by T. Jefferys coloured in yellow, and one folding plate. (A few slight tears to map margins.) Contemporary speckled calf (joints cracked, spine chipped, corners rubbed).

'A TIMELY BOOK' and important review of the known history of Florida, issued immediately after its cessation from Spain 'to satisfy British curiosity concerning the territory acquired' (Howgego). A short 'Natural History' is followed by 'A Geographical Account of the Rivers, Bays, and Islands, on the Coast', and a longer 'Account of the Several Expeditions made to Florida, by the English, French and Spaniards'. Pages 95-102 contain a letter on the colony by Captain Thomas Robinson, with a map of the Bay of Mobile. The maps were copied from existing sources by Thomas Jefferys (c. 1719-1771), much of whose work centred upon North America and the West Indies. Howes R-348; Sabin 71926.
