HOGARTH, William (1697-1764). The Analysis of Beauty written with a view of fixing the fluctuating ideas of taste. London: J. Reeves for the author, 1753.

4° (269 x 210mm). 2 folding engraved plates, dissected and mounted on linen, engraved subscription receipt mounted and bound in. (Occasional light spotting and soiling.) Contemporary half calf, flat spine, green morocco gilt lettering-piece, marbled endpapers (repaired, joints cracking, spine ends worn).

FIRST EDITION. The engraved vignette of 'Columbus breaking the Egg' which appears on the subscription receipt bound into the present work was re-used as a frontispiece in the second issue. Rothschild suggests that the first issue does not contain the plates either; or perhaps they had been used according to Hogarth's instructions: 'fit to frame for furniture'. Rothschild 1148.
