7 parts in one volume, oblong 2° (299 x 389mm). 294 engraved plates on 253 leaves distributed as: I: engraved title and 23 plates (20 lvs.); II: engraved title and 45 plates (46 lvs.); III: engraved title and 36 plates (30 lvs.); IV: engraved title, folding map, and 44 plates (44 lvs.); V: engraved title, 2 folding maps, and 57 plates (54 lvs.); VI: engraved title and 62 plates (41 lvs.); VII: engraved title and 17 plates (18 lvs.). (A few plates faintly browned.) 18th-century mottled calf, gilt board edges, mottled fore-edges, two pin fastenings on lower board (rebacked, a few other discreet repairs, modern marbled endpapers, clasps lacking). Provenance: an early ms. plate list -- Francis Ferrand Foljambe (stamp on title).
An extensive series of engravings depicting the major French chateaux and gardens, including Versailles and Fountainebleau, and Parisian views and architectural landmarks. It appears to have been issued by Mariette and N. de Poilly, in addition to Langlois. The present collection has uniform Langlois imprints and agrees with Berlin Kat., including the view "La Place St. Marc à Venise" at the end; the last view is of the Escurial at Madrid.
