Lot Essay

Kaete Ephraim Marcus studied art in Germany with Lovis Corinth and Max Beckmann. The latter's influence is particularly evident in her works of the 1920s and 1930s. She is best known for her portrait studies and intimate views of women and children, which she depicted with great sensitivity, capturing the emotional tensions and moods of the sitters.
