BRUSSELS, THIRD QUARTER 17TH CENTURY, AFTER JACOB JORDAENS

This panel forms part of the eight-tapestry series of The Story of Charlemagne designed by Jacob Jordaens (d. 1678) in the early 1660s. A nearly complete set of seven panels of this series is at the Quirinale and illustrated in N. Forti Grazzini, Il Patrimonio Artistico del Quirinale, Gli Arazzi, Rome, 1994, vol. II, pp. 311 - 328. That set was woven by five weavers of the third quarter 17th century in Brussels, Guillaume Roelants, Hendrik de Puttere, Jan van Leefdael, Jan Corijs and Joris Leemans. The panel at the Quirinale with identical subject to the present lot, but wider and with full borders, was woven by Leemans. A further set of seven survives with the the Prince de Ligne at the château d'Antoing in Tournai as well as in the Rockoxhuis at Antwerp.
