Lot Essay
William Lockhart was a well known surgeon trained in the Meath hospital, Dublin, and Guy's Hospital in London. He joined the London Missionary Society, and was in Canton in 1838 and travelled to Macau, Zhushan, Qinghai and Hong Kong. In 1843 he opened a hospital in Shanghai and worked in Beijing between 1861 and 1864, after which he returned to England permanantly. He collected mostly functional items and donated his library to the London Missionary Society where he was the chairman of the board between 1869-79.
