Lot Essay
Count Tessin (1695-1770) was Swedish ambassador to Paris, a writer and, according to M. Beurdeley, 'a man of liberal views'; see M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p. 197, cat. 202 for a tureen and cover from this service. The French market plate was made for Louis-Antoine Mirleau de Neuville, Fermier Général from 1758-80, who in 1760 married Adélaïde-Julie Garnier d'Isle, daughter of Charles Garnier, architect and controller-in-chief of the Royal buildings.
