Lot Essay
Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with diamond indexes in 1949 and its subsequent sale on 11 February 1950. Furthermore delivered with Patek Philippe original fitted brown leather presentation box.
Connoisseurs could probably quickly come to an agreement that the platinum version of the "chef-d'oeuvre" reference 2442 must be considered the most important, impressive and valuable rectangular Patek Philippe wristwatch of post war production. Reference 2442, introduced in 1948, impresses exactly 60 years after its introduction as much as it must have been a sensation when first presented. Its generous case proportions and fluid lines lend it a seductive presence hardly ever achieved by any other rectangular wristwatch.
Generally cased in yellow or pink gold, so far only three examples of this model in platinum are known to scholars. Last offered at auction in 1991 and preserved in very original and "as good as it can get" condition, the present platinum "Marilyn Monroe" (as also properly referred to by collectors) is the ultimate time only dress watch for the sophisticated watch collector.
Reference 2442 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 136, pl. 193.
