Lot Essay
This handsome Grecian-pedimented dining room sideboard-table, gadrooned by 'Pan' reeds, is supported on triumphal-arches of paired pillars that are reeded and palm-flowered; while its central recess was equipped with the sacrophagus wine-cistern (see lot 40). A related sideboard pattern of 1804 featured in George Smith's, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808 (pl. 92).
Interestingly George Bullock (d.1818), the Liverpool sculptor and cabinet-maker whom Sir John Gladstone is known to have patronised, produced designs for similarly pedimented sideboards with gadrooned 'slabs' which appear in Wilkinson Tracing's, now in the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. This serving table could have been commissioned for a new Dining Room at Seaforth around 1817 - when Anne Gladstone wrote to her brother Tom that her father was spending so much time altering the house that it shoud now be called 'Guttling Hall'.
Although Bullock is certainly a possible candidate for this serving table, the massive part-reeded legs are reminiscent of the legs of the 26 ft. dining-table supplied by Gillows to Hackwood Park, Hampshire, in 1813 (sold from there in Christie's house sale, 21-22 April 1998, lot 163).
