FIRST EDITION. 'Although not printed until 1868, this work was written about 1460, and is the first work of the early German surgeons. Pfolspeundt was a Bavarian army surgeon; his book includes the first allusion to the extraction of bullets, and gives an account of rhinoplasty' (Garrison-Morton). The book was reedited by Heinrich Haeser and Albrecht Middledorpf. Atkinson and Boulton (History of Anesthesia, pp. 29-33) discusses "hogbeans, poppies, and mandrake leaves -- a test of the efficacy of the medieval 'soporiphic sponge"'. Garrison-Morton 5558; Gnudi and Webster pp.113-115; Zeis 142.
