FIRST APPEARANCE of 'the first quantitative study in chemistry' (Gedeon p.117). 'Black demonstrated that an aeriform fluid that he called "fixed air" (carbon dioxide gas) was a quantitative constituent of various alkaline substances such as magnesia alba (magnesium carbonate), potash, lime, and soda', Norman 239; Partington III, pp. 130-143; cf.
