SAUSSURE, Horace Bénédict de (1740-99). Essais sur l'hygrométrie. Neuchâtel: Samuel Fauche & Sons, 1783. 4° (243 x 196mm). Half title, 2 engraved plates, one folding, one engraved headpiece (occasional few light spots). Contemporary sheep, spine lavishly gilt in compartments with floral and foliate motifs, lettering-piece (lightly rubbed, a few light stains on front cover). Provenance: C. Bonnet (1720-93, naturalist, uncle and teacher of Saussure).
FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED on title: 'Donné par le célébre Auteur. C. Bonnet'. Saussure 'invented the hair hygrometer - the only type of absorption hygrometer widely used in meteorology - and he was the first to prove that air expands and decreases in specific weight as its moisture content increases. This work describes Saussure's pioneering experiments with his new instrument as well as its application to meteorology', Norman 1894; Gedeon pp.55, 58-59; Sparrow 174.
