SCHOTT, Gaspar (1608-1666). Mechanica hydraulico-pneumatica ... Accessit experimentum novum Magdeburgicum, quo vacuum alij stabilire, alij evertere conantur. Würzburg: H. Pigrin for the heirs of J. Gottfried, 1657 (half-title dated 1658). 4° (205 x 157mm). Additional engraved title and 46 engraved plates on 45 plates, some folding, woodcut arms of the dedicatee on title-verso, with the final leaf of directions to the binder (some browning, especially in the plates, small stab-hole in Ll4-Mm2 with slight damage to text, fore-margin of engraved title shaved). Contemporary vellum.
FIRST EDITION of the first book by the Jesuit Gaspar Schott, a pupil of Athanasius Kircher. The first part is theoretical while the second part explodes into an extraordinary catalogue of machines illustrated by engraving and woodcut. 'Schott first published what had originally been intended as a brief guide to the hydraulic and pneumatic instruments in Kircher's Roman museum, expanding it into the first version of his Mechanica hydraulico-pneumatica. But he added as an appendix a detailed account of Guericke's experiments on vacuums (see lot 139), the earliest published report of this work' (DSB). Norman 1910.
