Lot Essay

According to the artist's daughter, Kit, the present work portrays William Orpen in despair over the death of his friend, Hugh Lane, in 1915, when the Lusitania sank off the west coast of Cork.

This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Christopher Pearson of the Orpen Research Project.
