Lot Essay

Davidson's work is held in many public collections including The Arts Council of Northern Ireland; Allied Irish Bank; National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland, Limerick; and Queen's University, Belfast. He has had hugely successful solo exhibitions at Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast and Solomon Gallery, Dublin.

Davidson's paintings are primarily concerned with the act of looking. Dickon Hall has commented [that they]; 'begin to dissect and analyse the act of looking at pictures and at the world, to remind us of the complexity and instability of the physical space we move in, through their overlaying of the view through a window with the reflection perceived in that window. The viewer approaches each work trying to define a space within the surface of the canvas, then isolating reflection from what we see through the window to form an easily coherent image, before gradually realising that the flat surface of the canvas equates to the flat surface of a glass window and that the "reality" we saw is a complex inter-weaving of mediated and overlapping seen fragments' (see D. Hall, introduction, Exhibition catalogue, Colin Davidson, Window Shopping, Solomon Gallery, Dublin, 2007).
