Lot Essay

The Royal Buckhounds Kennels at Ascot were established by Queen Anne (1665-1714), herself a keen huntswoman. In addition, she ordered the racecourse on Ascot Heath to be laid out in 1711. The Master of the Buckhounds was an officer in the Master of the Horse's department of the Royal Household. The holder was also the sovereign's representative at Ascot. As a political office, the Master (always a nobleman) changed with each ministry. The Master is not identified in this picture. However, the painting can be dated stylistically to the late 1830s and the figure may therefore be one of the following: George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield (elected 30 December 1834); William George Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll (elected 30 April 1835); or George William Fox Kinnaird, 1st Baron Kinnaird (elected 21 December 1839).
