Lot Essay

This shop is reputed to be from 'Pettit' Butcher's of Smithfield and Brighton. For related examples see J. Ayres, English Naive Painting, London, 1981, p. 30
J. Ayres, Two Hundred Years of English Naive Art 1700-1900, Alexandria, VA, 1996, no. 58, pp. 136-137
Other examples include one from the Collection of Bertram K. Little and Nina Fletcher Little, Sotheby's New York, 29 January 1994, lot 94. Another from the Judkyn/Pratt Collection, Christie's South Kensington, 8 November 1995, lot 52. A further example gifted to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London by H.R.H. Queen Mary, is illustrated in F.G. Roe, 'Christmas in Lilliput', The Magazine Antiques, December 1940, p. 277, fig.41. These may have once met some educational role, designed to be studied rather than played with as toys, as the cuts of meat and types of carcasses are rendered with some accuracy.
