Lot Essay

Although this is a traditional 'Company' subject from Calcutta or Tanjore (see S. C. Welch, Room for Wonder: Indian Painting during the British Period 1760-1880), New York, 1978, p. 72, no. 24), the stylisation of the subject and the colour scheme suggests an artist from the Deccan in Hyderabad.
