Lot Essay

For a very similar Kalligat painting with the same theme see the sale of 'The Scholar's Vision: The Pal Family Collection' sold Christie's New York, 20 March 2008, lot 315. The theme was a favourite in bhakti literature for demonstrating devotion to Krishna. See also J. Jain, Kalighat Painting: Images from a Changing World, 1999, pp. 83-84, fig. 80 and 81 for similar compositions.
