Lot Essay
Cooper exhibited two large watercolours at the Royal Academy in 1871. One titled January in 1871, depicted sheep in a snowy winter landscape, the other, Evening in the Meadows, no. 771 is possibly the present watercolour. A contemporary review states that it '... represents one of those autumnal evening effects which the artist delights to paint and can paint so well- the musing cattle transferred with more than photographic faithfulness...'.
