The Stadsschouwburg was built by Daniël Stalpaert in 1661-2. It burnt down in 1890 and was replaced by the Neo-Renaissance construction still standing today. The Leidsepoort at the right of the Stadsschouwburg, built by Stalpaert as well, was demolished in 1862 in order to enlarge the Leidseplein, for which purpose also part of the canal was filled in. The windmill Roomolen on the rampart Schinkel, beyond the bridge, was pulled down in 1844 to make place for the jailhouse that stood till the site was occupied by the new casino in the 1990's.
