Koshinaka's Echoers (Lot 434) is a series of eight C-print photographs. Exploring the effects of varying exposure phases, as well as the balance between sharp and soft focus, he creates visually appealing images of his subject matters. Through this technique, ordinary street scenes and crowds of people, become aesthetic compositions of color and form, while subtly revealing the artist's conceptual message.

In all eight photographs the crowd has turned its back to the viewer, walking away from him. Peeking through what seems to be a blurry curtain of color and light, our eyes suddenly meet the back of a person, detail or object that the focus of the camera has been directed towards.

Blurry shades of red, yellow and blue let the dominance of black stand out and outline the latter, creating unidentifiable figurative shadows. The inability to identify the people in the photographs creates a sense of disorientation and helplessness - irrational feelings of our deepest fears and nightmares, which stand in sharp contrast to the appealing compositions and colors.

Yet, the randomly appearing and disappearing people in the scenes of Echoers reflect a loss of identity, and overwhelming anonymity, both of which are common themes within contemporary societies.
