Original tan cloth gilt, uncut, dust-jacket (a few repairs with adhesive tape, a few short tears). Provenance: Percy Hockey, and thence by descent. First trade edition, fourth impression. ASSOCIATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "To Percy Hockey, from Augustus John." Augustus John provided 4 illustrations for the work, at pages 50, 126, 504 and 610. In this copy each is SIGNED BY THE ARTIST in blue ink.
T. E. Lawrence and Augustus John used to frequent Percy Hockey's hotel in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, the town where Augustus John lived. This copy was inscribed and signed for him by the artist in 1935, shortly after T. E. Lawrence's death in May of the same year.
