EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his elder son, Hans Albert, n.p., 14 June [1948], one page, 4to (a few minor pencil markings).
WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE DYING MILEVA? Einstein finds the idea that his daughter-in-law Frieda should go to Zurich [to visit the dying Mileva] a bad one: 'She is one of the women who have robbed Mileva (in her perception) of her male circle [Sie ist eine der Frauen, die Mileva (in ihrer Vorstellungswelt) ihrer Männer-Welt beraubt haben]'; Frieda's arrival might then be a dangerous schock. Even for practical purposes there is no need for her to go: Eduard's trustee Dr Meili has taken over the running of Mileva's practical affairs, sealing her flat, and Einstein has explained the financial situation to him. If the proceeds from her house sale are not available, Einstein will himself pay for Mileva's care. Hans Albert should write her a loving letter and say that they are both in constant contact and she should worry about nothing: 'I myself have not written to her, as I believe that it would not have a beneficial effect [Ich selber habe ihr nicht geschrieben, weil ich glaube, dass es nicht günstig wirken würde]'; Hans Albert should ensure that his letter is read whilst others are present.
