FIRST EDITION of Stumpff's history of Switzerland, which remained the chief authority on its subject until Scheuchzer's survey of Switzerland two centuries later. Historian and one of the most important personalities of the Swiss Revolution, Stumpff began his research in the 1540s, journeying throughout the country. After its first publication in 1548, the chronicle was enlarged in editions of 1586 and 1606, but the woodcuts are at their finest in this, the first edition. The Chronik is divided into 13 books, and it contains 13 new woodcut maps by Stumpff (5 double-page, 8 full-page) which were copied by several later mapmakers for regional atlases of Switzerland. The 10 smaller Honter maps first appeared two years earlier in his Rudimenta cosmographica. VD-16 S-9864; Nordenskiöld Collection 239. (2)
