GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642). Mathematical Discourses concerning Two New Sciences relating to Mechanicks and Local Motion, in Four Dialogues. Translated by Thomas Weston. London: Printed for J. Hooke, 1730.
4° (250 x 195mm). Title printed in red and black, woodcut initials, headpieces, numerous diagrams in text, plus one table. Final leaf of advertisements. (Small hole in Z1 not affecting text, very occasional light soiling, light offsetting to table.) Contemporary panelled calf, blindtooled, edges speckled red (rebacked and lightly restored). Provenance: manuscript corrections following errata -- E.N. da C. Andrade FRS (bookplate).
SECOND EDITION IN ENGLISH of Galileo's Two New Sciences. It was first translated by Thomas Salusbury in 1655. Edward Neville da Costa Andrade (1887-1971, FRS 1935) made notable contributions to popular science writing. In 1913 he worked with Ernest Rutherford in Manchester on gamma rays. Later in his career he held the posts of Fullerian Professor of Chemistry (1950-1952) and Director of the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory (1950-1952), before being appointed Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College. A fresh, crisp copy. Carli-Favaro 118 (452); De Caro 31.
