KATAKURA KAKURYO. Sanka Hatsumo [Treatise on Obstetrics]. Edo: Kansei 11 [1799].
6 volumes bound in 4, 4° (265 x 175mm). Xylographically printed on double leaves folded in the oriental manner. Woodcut illustrations. (Worming affecting text of about 18 leaves, some light worming at inner gutters, a few leaves creased.) Original yellow wrappers and title-slips (stitching renewed), modern protective cloth case.
FIRST EDITION. Katakura's book was of lasting influence on Japanese obstetrics, and most copies available in Japanese libraries have extensive hand-written notes. Some 35 woodcuts, out of a total of almost 150, were taken from Heendrik van Deventer's Manuale operatien (The Hague, 1701), a work which gave the first accurate description of the pelvis. The cuts show the position of the fetus in relation to the pelvis at different stages of pregnancy, and even show the position of twins. G.E. Mestler A Catalogue of Old Japanese Medical Books II, 494-497; not in Kerlen.
