rectangular, 4½ x 3¾ in. (115 x 95 mm.), gilt-metal frame, the reverse with paper label inscribed 'Miniature Portrait of myself, painted in Bombay, in 1816, by Mr. Jukes, an English Artist there, just after my journey overland into Egypt, Palastine, Mesopotamia & Persia: & while I wore the beard & dress there faithfully delineated - I was then 30 years old & the likeness was thought perfect JS Buckingham May 1843'

Lot Essay

James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855) travelled extensively thoroughout the Middle East between 1813 and 1818, before settling in Calcutta, where he established and edited the Calcutta Journal. On his return to England, he continued his career in journalism by publishing articles about his travels and founded several journals. From 1832 to 1837, he sat in the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Sheffield and campaigned for social reform.
