"Charles Rousseau says that he always prefers his Chambertin to his Clos de Beze, though it sometimes takes 20 years for the Chambertin to show its superiority. By contrast, I normally have a slight preference for the spicy elegance of the Beze but it's no contest in 1999. The 99 Beze is wonderfully rich and long but lacks the compelling power, structure and overall quality of either the Chambertin or the CSJ. To be sure, the 99 Beze is a terrific wine though it does not quite measure up to the extraordinary heights routinely achieved in prior vintages." BH (Jan 2001)
