Lot Essay
The successor to the monteith, the verrière made its appearance during the late 18th century. Typically oval and often with drop ring handles, or as with the present pair fixed handles, it was intended to be filled with ice or cold water to allow inverted glasses to be suspended from the notched rim.
Other examples by Odiot are known and indeed they would have been a prominent feature in most of the grand services produced by the firm in the early 19th century. See for example one from the Countess Branicki service, with a very similar rim to the present example, Christie's New York 23 October 2000, lot 164 and a pair on similar feet, Christie's London, 17 March 1999, lot 70.
