Edmund, 1st Viscount Allenby of Megiddo (1861-1936) was a distinguished 1st World War General. He first saw action in the Boer War (1899-1902). He later commanded the cavalry under General Haig at the outset of the 1st World War. After the battle of Arras in 1917 he was posted as commander of Palestine, defeating the Turkish forces and capturing Jerusalem in December 1917. His finest hour was the battle of Megiddo. This victory led in part to the armistice being signed on 30 October 1918. He was created a viscount in 1919. He died in 1936 and was buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
