2o (508 x 330 mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece by F.H. van Hoven and 29 double-page astronomical maps, mounted on guards, all FINELY COLORED AND SOME HEIGHTENED IN GILT BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Tiny hole to engraved title, some maps with tears to or near central fold mostly repaired on verso, a few short marginal tears, some creases, some minor marginal browning or dampstaining.) ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S DUTCH VELLUM gilt, gilt-panelled with large central gilt arabesque, smooth spine in eight compartments, yapp board-edges, gilt edges (some light darkening to vellum, a few small stains, lacks ties). Provenance: unidentified consignor (sale Christie New York, 20 May 1988, lot 105).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF THE ONLY CELESTIAL ATLAS PUBLISHED DURING THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH CARTOGRAPHY AND PROBABLY THE FINEST CELESTIAL ATLAS EVER PUBLISHED. The 29 double-page maps of Cellarius Harmonia macrocosmica depict the the planetary systems of Claudius Ptolemy, Nicolaus Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe, the motions of the sun, the moon, the planets, and the delineation of the constellations in the form of classical and biblical figures, animals and instruments. Andreas Cellarius was born in Neuhausen, a small town near Worms in Germany. From 1625 to 1637 he worked as a schoolmaster in Amsterdam and later The Hague, and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where Cellarius was appointed to be the rector of the Latin School.
