KEPLER, Johannes. Dissertatio com nuncio sidereo nuper ad mortales misso Galilaeo Galilaeo. Florence: J.A. Caneus, 1610.
4o ( 205 x 145 mm). (Some scattered light foxing). Contemporary vellum (spine worn and chipped).
KEPLER'S ENDORSEMENT OF GALILEO'S OBSERVATIONS WITH THE TELESCOPE
Second edition, a letter of the imperical mathematician Kepler in support of Galileo's Sidereus nuncius magna (Venice, 1610). Galileo published his "Starry Messenger" early March 1610, and Kepler received a copy from Galileo on April 8. Kepler's pamphlet "Conversation with the Starry Messenger" was printed in May, and the above edition appeared shortly after. Kepler's work helped Galileo to persuade some of his critics in Italy. Galileo wrote to Kepler: "I thank you because you were the first one, and practically the only one, to have complete faith in my assertions" (DSB). It is also notable, as apparently the earliest work of a scientist to discuss space travel. Casper 35.
