Folding engraved frontispiece in each volume, folding map in vol.1, 64 plates, and numerous text engravings (10 full-page) all after Frederick Catherwood (some browning and occasional spotting, some occasional offsetting from text). (Some occasional spotting.) Original cloth, gilt-decorated on front covers and spines (rebacked preserving original spines, some wear at corners and edges). Provenance: P.B. Foster (signature on front free endpapers of each vol.).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Stephens' follow-up to Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan. Both books served to establish the field of Mayan archaeology. "Stephens provided accurate, detailed descriptions of the ruins, and he was the first to establish that the many Mayan sites were part of a single civilization that existed up to the time of the Spanish conquest and that the Indians were the direct descendants of that civilization" (ANB).
