Lot Essay

Bart(holomeus) van Hove was part of the nineteenth century academic school of sculptors. After 1880 he became the official portraitist of his era. He portrayed artist (the painters Johannes Bosboom and Charles Rochussen, now in the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum), academics, directors, statesmen and royalty (prince Hendrik of the Netherlands, King Willem III and Queen Wilhelmina). In 1900 he became Professor of Sculpture at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam.
