Chairs of this pattern include a set of ten 'neat bamboo chairs with loose seats' supplied for William Drake, Shardeloes, Buckinghamshire by John Linnell in 1767 (H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William & John Linnell, London, 1980, vol. II, p. 33, fig. 58 & vol. I., p. 101).
The superb collection acquired by John, 2nd Earl of Ashburnham (d. 1812) included a considerable amount of English furnishings in the French taste, which comprised the impressive pair of George III black and gilt lacquer commodes attributed to Pierre Langlois, demonstrating the 2nd Earl's taste for French style and design (sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 16 November 1995, lot 67 (£495,500)) and the pair of ormolu-mounted mahogany serpentine commodes, attributed to William Vile and John Cobb (sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 June 2001, lot 140).
