The triumphal-arched clock-case is designed in the Grecian cippus fashion with by a golden sun, in Egyptian fashion, crowning the pediment plinth of its hollow-sided 'altar' case. This bracket clock pattern, with carrying handle in place of a golden globe, features in the sketch-book of Messrs Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800; Royston, 1995, fig. 299). The Edinburgh clockmaker Thomas Reid, who established his Princes Street partnership with William Auld in 1806, published a Treatise on Clock and Watchmaking, 1826, which included a celebrated clock that he had made in 1811 for the Kinfuans Castle observatory (sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 25 November 1998, lot 355).
