Lot Essay

This type of rectangular chair, with its spirally-turned frame, is one of the most characteristic types of Dutch seat-furniture of the second half of the 17th century. The upholstery of these chairs was often en suite with a table-carpet and other textiles in a room in order to produce a unity which was so admired. This handsome effect is visible in a picture of a Dutch interior by Jacob Ochterveld, c. 1670, depicting a chair, which is virtually identical to the offered lot (P. Thornton, Authentic Decor 1620-1920, London, 1984, p. 42, fig. 43).
