RUSSIAN, 17TH CENTURY
At the far right the Three Wise Men on horses, the foreground focusing on Christ dressed in white garments, seated on an altar-like bench, supported by his Mother, the older of the Three Magi wearing a lavish cape with ermine fur hood, kneeling and offering a casket with gold to the Child, the second Wise Man rendered beyond and observing his servant giving incense to Christ, lastly the third King appearing at the rear conversing with his own attendant and holding a vessel with myrrh; Joseph standing behind the Mother of God, the ox and donkey represented under the construction, the latter animal chewing hay from the rafters; the icon painted with bright colours, predominantly red, framed by a raised ochre border
