The encased icon divided into four sections depicting the Mother of God of Kazan, the Birth of the Mother of God, the Decollation of St. John the Baptist and three Biblical Fathers; above an ogee shaped compartment with the Narrative of the Hospitality of Abraham; the left wing showing episodes from the life of the Mother of God, surmounted by the Annunciation, followed by her Presentation to the Temple, the Pokrov, and her Dormition; the right with Christological events, the Nativity, Baptism, Transfiguration, and Anastasis; the central icon painted in the traditional style of the 17th century, with a hammered basma and applied incised haloes; the borders of the wings covered by metal bands etched with scrolling decoration
