Lot Essay

French furniture was imported into Holland in such large quantities that local cabinet-makers attempted to emulate the fashionable French style from the 1760s onwards. These immitations of French furniture are sometimes so convincing that it is quite difficult to distinguish them from their originals. The fashion for French furniture even spread to the Dutch colonies, which is epitomised by this fauteuil de bureau, and is discussed in J. Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, The Hague, 1985, p.107.
