Lot Essay

The decoration of this bottle is inspired by the eight-character inscription which is on the back and which can be translated as follow: 'The stars and the moon shine brightly and clearly and the Milky Way hangs in the sky'.
Two identical examples, also dated from Daoguang reign, are illustrated in Snuff Bottles - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 2003, pl.336 and pl.339.
Another from the Meriem collection was sold in our New York Rooms, 19 September 2007, lot 668.
