A RARE POLYCHROME WOOD SCULPTURE OF GUANYIN
CHINA, LATE MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)

Lot Essay

Guanyin depicted in the posture known as 'royal ease' became standard representation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion in paradise after the 10th century. This sculpture represents 'Guanyin of the Lion Roar' (Simhanada Avalokitesvara) with the roar symbolizing the moment of transcendent understanding and Guanyin's supernatural wisdom.

The result of radiocarbon dating (no. ETH-26724) at the Institute of Particle Physics, Zurich, Switzerland, is consistent with the dating of this lot.
