A FINELY CARVED LARGE BAMBOO SHOULAO GROUP
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
Finely carved as a seated Shoulao, Star God of Longevity, the bald head modelled with characteristic protrubrance, his mouth agape to reveal a smiling expression, his long beard falling onto a voluminous robe tied across the ample waist with a ribbon, one hand supporting a lingzhi spray, the other hand clutching a fruiting peach spray, further detailed with a bat, the central figure is surrounded by nine young boys variously at play including one standing in front of Shoulao, raising a ruyi with both hands to distract the attention of the bat, two engaged in a mock-fight, another riding on a deer releasing a bird, three observing a yinyang symbol on an unfolded scroll and a further two picking Shoulau's right ear, all on a rockwork ground detailed with two cranes foraging amidst vegetation
